Tassimo T-Discs vs Regular Coffee Pods

First off, understand that the point to this writing isn't to convince you that a normal coffee pod brewer is superior to the Tassimo. Instead, the purpose is to be sure you know what it is you are purchasing, and the issues you are likely to encounter in the future. Normal coffee pods can't touch the sophistication of the Tassimo device, which use bar-codes, printed straight to the T-Discs to know how to make their brews. However, the biggest problem with Tassimo brewers also comes from this technology - it's impossible to use anything but T-Discs with them.

Don't All Single Serve Coffee Makers Have This Problem?

This is not as big a problem with other single serve coffee makers and systems as you might would think. Although it's not nearly as simple as using the coffee pods that were intended for them, you can find adapters and converters that will convert almost every other format to another. There are usually problems to be overcome, and, because there's very little standardization between the various manufacturers, things that are advertised to be "universal" may or may not be. However, these are problems can be overcome simply by trial and error. If something doesn't work with one coffee pod, you can always try a different brand, for instance.

What Makes It So Much Worse For The Tassimo System?

The problem lies within the shape of T-Discs. You can tell just by looking at them why you can't just swap them out with anything else. Add to that the bar-coding system, which means that it there's any modification to the T-Disc, the method of brewing it will no longer be accurate. There are those who have tried to refill used T-Discs, but they're not re-sealable, and they have to be sealed for the brewer to be able to build up the required pressure to brew.

Why Not Just Use T-Discs?

Although the idea behind buying the Tassimo brewer obviously includes using T-Discs, there are a few reasons why this might not work out quite like expected. Many times folks simply cannot afford T-Discs. They're not cheap, and are a bit overkill if all you want is a cup of coffee. Availability can also be an issue. Small town grocery stores, for example, typically do not stock things like this. Some simply object to the idea. Buying a Tassimo forces the consumer to continue buying from that company in the form of the T-Discs. Some people don't like how that looks. Although there are a few other brand names making T-Discs, it's pretty obvious that it's all licensed.

But I Already Have A Tassimo T-Disc Brewer...

If you already own a Tassimo Brewer and are looking for alternatives, your options are quite limited. This is why I really hope people think twice before buying such a proprietary product. Your best bet, especially if your main concern is money, would be to pick up a cheap pod coffee brewer, and just use coffee pods the majority of the time. Coffee pods are generally available everywhere, and can be purchased cheaply online, in bulk, if need be.

Just bought one and set it up on my night-table, it's like having Starbucks hand me a latté in bed before I even have to get up...makes getting up a breeze once I've enjoyed that perfect treat.

Tassimo lets you make great cappucino and lattes. For plain coffee, I use a french press with Starbucks ground coarse with a cuisenart grinder. It's awesome.

we have had this machine for few months now ,we love it

I agree the discs are pricey ,it runs about $1 per cappuccino or latte ..but still much cheaper than Starbucks!

I have had my Tassimo about 8 months now, and LOVE it! My Mom has gone through several keurigs as they keep breaking down. As a plus, you can buy t-cups in bulk on Amazon at quite nice prices, or wait for Tassimo's sales (they are always having buy some, get some free sales) and stock up with free shipping!

My first Tassimo was a Christmas present. I loved it, the taste was outstanding, and so I bought a large supply of T-disks of every kind.

Less than a year later my Tassimo went awry and had to be replaced. Fortunately it was replaced that time. The new one worked fine -- less than a year -- and went awry too.

I am not going to the store (Bed Bath, etc.) and hope that they replaced the machine one more time. Meanwhile I have a supply of disks for about $200 -- which forces me to insist on using this cranky machine. Not fair. And very expensive, more than it should be.

I bought my first one in December for my office, then proceeded to buy two more for my house and cabin. Nothing comes close to the quality of the Tossimo, especially for lattes and cappuccino's; they really are coffee shop quality. I myself dont find the cost an issue if what one likes are espresso drinks. For example, I can get the 8 pack at Bed Bath and Beyond for around $10; compare that to 8 cappuccino's at Starbucks or elsewhere for around $3.00 each (plus tip) and the eqaution is that the Tossimo costs about 1/3 the price as going to a coffee shop like Starbucks. I could not be happier with my purchase(s).

Well, we have one. Had it for about 2 years now. And as some compare the cost being so much cheaper than Fourbucks, don't forget the time you gain from not having to stand in that line! I very seldom drink anything but the Maxwell House blend. My wife drinks all the caps and latts. Good machine. Wish Target would keep some more stock on the t-disks.
